Professor Quality Systems, Massey University
Nigel is the Professor of Quality Systems at Massey University, and group leader of the Industrial Management and Innovation Cluster within Massey’s School of Engineering and Advanced Technology. This group undertakes teaching, research and consultancy, and delivers post graduate programmes related to product innovation, quality systems, supply chain management, logistics, Business Excellence and continual systems improvement. Group members work closely with most sectors of the NZ economy including manufacturing, services, defence, health care, agriculture and horticulture, local government and the non-profit sector.
Before entering the university system as an academic, Nigel worked in PC manufacturing (IBM), aeroengine component forging and oil and gas pipeline extrusion, in the UK. It was in these industrial settings that he developed an initial interest in quality management and systems improvement. He has since practiced, taught and researched in this field for over 25 years, applying the methods and practices within many sectors.
Nigel moved to New Zealand and began working at Massey University in 2003. He has given workshops and keynote addresses at conferences, symposia and other professional gatherings in New Zealand, Australia, Asia and Europe. He is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt; a former President and current member of the New Zealand Organisation for Quality; a Fellow of the Chartered Quality Institute (UK); and a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (USA). He is currently serving as the ASQ’s country counsellor for New Zealand, and as an Associate Editor of the Routledge international journal Total Quality Management and Business Excellence.
